The Mineral Institute Suriname will have the functions of Cadastre, Geological Survey and of Inspectorate in order to efficiently and transparently regulate the mining sector. With the appointment of a team of specialist consultants, the Project Implementation Unit is able to give substance to the development process of the new institute.

In the coming weeks, the plan of approach will be worked out with various stakeholders. Besides the institutes involved, the Geological Mining Service (GMD), Bauxite Institute Suriname (BIS) and the Unit Ordening Small Scale Gold Sector Suriname (OKGS), also stakeholders from the sector will be involved.  For example, a number of discussions have already been held online with various organizations in recent weeks.

Over the next two weeks, PIU and the team of consultants will use consultations and workshops to analyze technical and capacity issues in a participatory manner in order to come up with a strategy for the organizational development process. Some of the central elements in this strategy will be at least the digitization of the geological survey, and the capacity strengthening of the staff. But also forms of cooperation, transparent work processes and separation of functions of the three parts of the DIS will receive attention.

The DIS strategy workshop, on Wednesday, March 10, will therefore be a first milestone in the development of the new DIS. Minister of Natural Resources (NH) David Abiamofo, will open this workshop. He will stress the importance and urgency of the workshop, and of DIS as a strong institution, necessary for sustainable mining and for the economic development of Suriname.
